Can an SUV with room for up to 8 passengers actually feel sporty? In the case of the all-new Mazda CX-90, yes.
Sporty is a relative term, of course. After all, the CX-90—which replaces the CX-9 as Mazda’s new flagship SUV—is a midsize crossover, not the brand’s zippy 2-seat Miata sports car. Still, the family resemblance is there in its responsive steering and handling, which makes the CX-90 feel solid and planted even on winding stretches of road, where many of its competitors would feel sluggish.
Our test car came equipped with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain consisting of an inline 4-cylinder engine and an electric motor, good for 323 hp, 25 mpg in combined city/highway driving (premium fuel recommended), 56 MPGe, and an all-electric range of 26 miles. Two other turbocharged 6-cylinder powertrains are available; AWD is standard on all versions.
Inside, Mazda has upped its game with handsome design and upscale, quality materials—such as a faux-suede dash covering—that you’d expect to find on more expensive imports. There’s good room up front and in the available second-row captain chairs, but the third row is a tight fit for grown-ups, and cargo capacity is below average.
Nonetheless, the CX-90’s good looks and strong overall performance earn it a spot near the top of any list of highly desirable crossovers.
